As your arc travels around the circumference of a pipe, your work angle, travel angle, and relationship to gravity shift every fraction of an inch.

The Positions and Joints Beginners Meet First in Pipe Welding
To build strong fundamentals, instructors start students on basic orientation setups before moving to complex pipe welding configurations. Standardized test positions help organize training by establishing clear expectations for how the pipe sits relative to the welder.
The foundational positions and joints include:
- 1G (Rolled Horizontal). The pipe rests horizontally on turning rolls while the welder works from the top position. This setup allows you to maintain a flat welding technique as the pipe rotates beneath your arc.
- 2G (Fixed Vertical). The pipe stands vertically like a flagpole, and you lay your weld horizontally around the joint. You must fight gravity to keep the molten puddle from sagging toward the lower edge.
- 5G (Fixed Horizontal). The pipe rests horizontally in a fixed position, requiring you to weld vertically up or down around the circumference. You will transition through overhead, vertical, and flat positions in a single continuous pass.
- 6G (Fixed at a 45-Degree Angle). The pipe remains locked at a 45-degree angle. This test position incorporates elements of all other positions and serves as an industry benchmark for advanced proficiency.
- Open-Root Butt Joints. Two pipe sections meet end-to-end with a bevel and gap, requiring full penetration on the initial root pass without backing material.
- Socket and Fillet Joints. One pipe slides into a fitting or flange, requiring a fillet weld to secure the connection rather than a full-penetration groove weld.
The Habits That Separate Strong Beginners
Technical knowledge alone does not make a great craftsperson. The daily habits you practice in the shop determine how quickly you improve and how durable your welds turn out. Strong beginners focus on consistency over speed.
First, prioritize joint preparation. A clean bevel, precise root land, and uniform gap set the stage for a clean root pass. If you skip proper grinding or leave oil and mill scale near the joint, contaminants will enter the weld pool and cause porosity or internal inclusions.
Second, master your body position before you strike an arc. Plan your movement for the entire pass. Dry-run your motion with the torch or electrode holder to ensure your arms and torso can complete the travel without catching on equipment or running out of range of motion.
Third, watch the puddle, not the light. Novices often stare directly at the bright arc light, missing the subtle cues of the molten pool. Pay close attention to how the edges of the pool freeze and blend into the side walls of the pipe. Adjust your travel speed and rod movement based on what the puddle tells you.
